The “SHILA DEVI” temple is situated at Amber Fort of pink city the JAIPUR. Ruler of Amber (Jaipur) Maharaja Mansingh 1st was a devotee of goddess Kali and invoked her grace both in peace and during war. According to history and legend, this image of “SHILA DEVI” was brought by Maharaja Man Sing from eastern part of Bengal in the last quarter of 16th century A.D. while in an encounter with ruler Kedar ( a ruler in the empire of king Pratapadity). Maharaja Man Singh did not get success for the 1st time and so he prayed for the success to goddess kali. The goddess gave him a vision in dream and took a promise from him for her salvation from the lot, she was then subjected to a black stone slab which is called ‘shila’ in hindi. As a result of the promise given by the Maharaja Man Singh, the goddess Kali blessed him with victory in the forthcoming battle.
This stone image of Shila Devi was lying in the sea in the form of a black stone slab (called shila in hindi) and was taken out and brought by the Maharaja Man Singh at Amber where it was founded in a beautiful temple buildup by him in the Amber Fort campus for the goddess. Later on it became popular by the name of “Shila Devi Temple”. The beautiful white marble stone carving work in the temple is world fame. The main entrance gate of temple is made of silver with attractive carving work and nine incarnations of Shakti (Durga) namely Shail Putri, Bramhcharini, Chandra Ghanta, Kooshmanda, Skand Mata, Katyayani, Kaal Ratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhi Datri and ten mahavidyas (ten incarnations of goddess shakti) namely Kali, Tara, Shodashi (Tripur Sundari), Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairvi, Chinnmasta, Dhumwati, Baglamukhi, Maatangi, and Kamla engraved on silver doors of the temple. Immaculate workmanship has gone into the construction of the temple. Elegantly carved pillars, walls, panels shows an exquisite depiction. Floral patterns and life like impression in the carved work bewitch the beholders. Extremely beautiful is the whole conception of the temple. Adherence to the principles of vastu has made the temple an ideal work of architecture. The temple has a world wide renown Among the temples of Devi Durga in India, this temple holds an important place.
The Amber Fort and Shila Devi Temple are situated on a hill covered with verdurous coverage. It is cozily nestled in the lap of mother nature. Two other forts are also situated nearby the Amber Fort namely “JAY GARH” and “NAHAR GARH”. The Jay Garh fort is also world wide renown in many aspects.

IMPORTANT ABOUT SHILA DEVI IDOL
Apart of above legend about the Shila Devi Idol there are another more important legend is famous about the Idol of Goddess Shila Devi.
1. As per the legend, initially Maharaja Mansigh and the Goddess Shil Devi were able to talk each other face to face and it was happened there on some very special needy times and occasions.
2. An another legend is most popular among the people of Amber / Jaipur is about the tilted neck of the Goddess Shila Devi Idol, The famous legend express the reason of the tilted neck / face. According to the legend, initially the neck of the idol was straight. Those days sometimes on very special cause and occasions oblation of human being performed and offered her as Bhog. Later on, oblations of human being get restricted. Then after, oblation of He-buffalo started for the special Bhog. It was also stopped because of some un known reasons. Then oblation of of Ram and Lamb or He-goat started on special occasions only specially in holy time of Navratras. Later on oblations quietly stopped due to non-violence policies. Legend says that on stopping of human being oblations Maa Kali the SHILA DEVI got angered and tilted her neck to show her anger and refusal of any other kind of Bhog, with this refusal and anger of Maa Kali the conversation of Maharaja and Goddess Shila Devi also braked.
